It’s a wrap for Chicago Med season 7

It’s official, Chicago Med has wrapped filming season 7.

Now we just have to be patient while the show takes a two week break before they air the final push of the last three episodes of the season!

This Wednesday fans will be treated to a rebroadcast of season 7, episode 8 and next Wednesday will follow up with episode 9 of the same season.

As we prepare for the season finale, which is scheduled to air on May 25, it’s fun to look back on all the interesting and exciting things which have transpired thus far.

S. Epatha Merkerson plays favorites

In the beginning of April fans celebrated Once Chicago Day where traditionally, cast members treat their fans to exclusive interviews, discuss their favorite scenes, and answer questions from the fans.

S. Epatha Merkerson, who has been playing the role of Sharon Goodwin since Chicago Med began in 2015, shared in her exclusive interview that her favorite scenes are the ones where she enjoys appearing with as much of the cast as possible. When asked if she had a favorite scene she said, “Instead of one scene, I’d say all those scenes over the years when the entire cast is on set,”

She specifically mentioned the Season 7 Christmas episode Secret Santa Has a Gift for You, which features a large holiday party where many of the central characters are in attendance, as an example, and said, “This year we did a big Christmas scene … when you’re working you don’t get to see everybody. It’s just really a lot of fun when we’re all together.”

Season 7, episode 9, Secret Santa Has a Gift for You will air on Wednesday May 4, a week before the last 3 new episodes of the season will begin airing.

Kristen Hager leaves Chicago Med

Kristen Hager, who played Dr. Stevie Hammer, joined the cast as a series regular for Season 7 following the departure of Yaya DaCosta and Torrey DeVitto. Her final appearance was in episode 14 titled All The Things That Could’ve Happened

In the episode Stevie reconciled with her bipolar mother and then decided to go to Michigan to attempt to reconcile with her estranged husband and give her marriage another try. While it seems her departure is permanent, the door has been left open for her to return to the series.

In an interview with Variety, executive producer Diane Frolov said, “What’s happening with Stevie right now is she’s going back to try and reconnect with her husband and make that work. So we’re leaving that up in the air. Does that in fact happen? She is a character that has the potential to return.”

Steven Weber was upped to series regular

Around the same time Hager joined the cast, it was announced that Steven Weber signed a deal to remain on Chicago Med as a series regular for season eight. Weber has played Dr. Dean Archer since his arrival on the series in season six and was bumped up to series regular status for season seven.

Dean Archer was quickly promoted to interim chief of the Emergency Department at Chicago Med after his old military buddy Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) was shot in the season 6 finale.

Brian Tee returned as Ethan Choi

As we mentioned, in the season 6 finale, Choi (Brian Tee) was shot and Archer had to take over his position as interim chief of the Emergency Department. Choi was absent for most of the seventh season, but finally returned during Episode 18 on Wednesday, April 13.

Showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider said during One Chicago Day that he will be in the rest of the episodes of the season and hinted, “Ethan has gone through a lot of changes in his life with the shooting.”

While Brian Tee‘s character took time away to recover both physically and mentally following a gunshot wound, Tee was busy filming Amazon Prime Video’s The Expats opposite Nicole Kidman.

Maggie and Vanessa’s relationship evolved

Charge nurse Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) and her daughter, Dr. Vanessa Taylor (Ashja Cooper) have done some major work on their relationship in season 7. “When she went to find Vanessa, she wound up lighting a fuse, and she has no idea where that bomb is gonna go off,” executive producer Andrew Schneider teased during a One Chicago press day. “And there’s more explosions to come.”

During the fall finale and S. Epatha Merkerson’s favorite episode of the season, Vanessa revealed to the hospital staff that Maggie is her biological mother. Since then the two have bonded over a drug test and Maggie’s almost pregnancy, which turned out to be a mass instead of an embryo.

In episode 13 Vanessa firmly said that she considers Maggie to be her friend, and hopes that Maggie feels the same way about her.

All the One Chicago dramas are wrapping their seasons soon. Chicago PD is expected to finish filming by the end of this week and we expect Chicago Fire to wrap on May 10, 2022.

Chicago Med will air a brand new episode on May 11, 2022 with the episode titled End of the Day, Anything Can Happen. The episode will see the Gaffney team deal with a risky liver transplant between a grandmother and grandson.

Reel Chicago wishes the cast and crew a relaxing two month hiatus. We look forward to seeing the final episodes of Season 7 and can’t wait to see what you have in store for Season 8.
