Celebrating Black History Month in Chicago: Events and Activities for 2025

Black History Month is acknowledged every February, and this year more than ever, we celebrate and honor the achievements, contributions, and rich cultural heritage of African Americans.

Originating from Negro History Week in 1926, founded by historian Carter G. Woodson, the month-long observance was officially recognized in 1976. Throughout the United States, communities come together to reflect on Black history, celebrate progress, and acknowledge the work still needed to achieve racial equity. In Chicago, a city deeply connected to Black history and culture, numerous events and activities provide opportunities to engage, learn, and celebrate.

Black History Month activities for the month:

The Chicago History Museum will host a commemorative day on February 22 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, featuring discussions on how art has influenced social change within Chicago’s African American community. Attendees can enjoy interactive art activities, music, and guest speakers.

These events will feature performances, workshops, and community gatherings.
