Hollywood sounds out Evanston studio

Evanston isn’t known as a hotbed of feature work, but Studiomedia Recording, located in the suburb’s picturesque downtown area, snagged recent Hollywood gigs from directors Harold Ramis and Neil LaBute.

Ramis lives on the North Shore, so Studiomedia was an obvious choice when it came to ADR for his upcoming $75 million Bible-stories comedy “Year One.”

The Judd Apatow Productions movie is set for June 19 distribution by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Columbia Pictures.

Using an ISDN connection, Ramis was able to direct voice performances from stars Jack Black and Michael Cera, who were in L.A. and Michigan, respectively.

“Ramis dropped in three times over a year,” says engineer Maya Kuper. “Postproduction on the film was quite protracted so our proximity to his home definitely helped.”

Ramis’ latest comedy “is very Monty Python-esque,” says engineer Maya Kuper, a graduate of nearby Northwestern University, who spent three years with Big House Casting & Audio.

An NU connection at L.A.’s Automat Pictures was responsible for bringing Michigan-born writer/director Neil LaBute into the studio to record the “Lakeview Terrace” DVD commentary.

New North Shore resident actress Julia Sweeney (“Saturday Night Live”) recently used Studiomedia to record voiceover for upcoming animated sitcom “The Goode Family,” from Mike Judge (creator of “Beavis and Butthead,” “King of the Hill”) due to premiere on ABC this year.
