Hay deftly moves from stage to screen with diner drama “Hard Scrambled,” based on his own play

David Scott Hay has just completed the eight-year journey from stage to screen for his debut feature “Hard Scrambled,” an epic contest for control of a greasy spoon.

Kurtwood Smith (“That 70’s Show”), Richard Edson (“Do the Right Thing”), and Eyal Podell (“Sucker Free City”) star as denizens of the diner.

They aim to fill the power vacuum created when the owner (Beth Grant, “Matchstick Men”) is incapacitated in a deep fryer mishap.

Co-founder of Visions & Voices Theatre Company, Hay adapted “Hard Scrambled” from his own play, which debuted in San Antonio and then played at the Factory Theatre here in 1999.

“We got a great review in New City, and their critic Lucia Mauro wrote that the dialogue would transfer well to film,” Hay said. “I decided to write a low budget script, using ?In the Company of Men’ as a template.”
