Gustafson’s Bud spots the viewers’ choice

Cutters’ Grant Gustafson has earned a special place in the pantheon editorial excellence by having editing two of the most popular Super Bowl commercials of the decade.

In the “Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials” special that aired on CBS Feb. 4, the Friday before Super bowl XLV, viewers voted his Budweiser spots their first and second most favorite spots.

Ten spots in all were cited and among the formidable competiton were Doritos “Power Crunch” (2009), E-Trade’s “Baby Burp Up” (2008), Tide “To Go Interview” (2008), Budweiser “Rock Paper Scissors” (2007) and Budweiser “Super Fan” (2006) that were among the 10 best.

Viewers – an estimated 9.5 million watched the show – chose “Super Fan,” directed by John O’Hagan which Gustafson cut in 2006 as their all-time favorite and “Team Clydesdale,” directed by Joe Pytka in 2008 right behind it in second place.

“It was a real honor to even have one spot in the list, but to have two. I was completely overwhelmed,” says Gustafson, a spot editor on major ad campaigns since 2003.

Gustafson also claims as clients Dunkin Donuts/Hill Holliday, Sears Optical/Sponge, Bourzin cheese/DDB and Craftsman Tools/Y&R

DDB is the agency for Budweiser and the creative directors on the top spots were Barry Burdiak and John Hayes.
