Grammer loses third term as Starz cancels “Boss”

Another Chicago mayor is out of a job.  Starz television network has canceled political drama “Boss” after two seasons, due to underwhelming ratings the second season, although the first season was so hot the new network chief greenlit it before the first season aired.

”Boss” starred Kelsey Grammer as corrupt Chicago mayor Tom Kane, for which he won a Golden Globe for best actor in a drama earlier this year.

But Chicago-set “Boss” may not be ready for extinction just yet. The network confirmed to L.A. media that it was in discussions to wrap things up with a two-hour movie, which would reunite the cast and crew for another two or more months. No deals are in place, however.

While season one of “Boss” won critical acclaim and started off with respectable viewership, it took a dive in season two. Its October 2011 premiere attracted 659,000 viewers, which dropped to 317,000 viewers with the season two premiere and averaged under 580,000 over the season.

“Boss” also starred Connie Neilsen, Jeff Hephner, Martin Donovan, Troy Garity, Kathleen Robertson and many local actors including Francis Guinan, Daniel J. Travanti, Tony Mockus, Sr., Danny Goldring, Amy Morton, Doug James, David Pasquesi and Christian Stolte. Claire Simon cast actors in both seasons of the show.

The two season-series employed more than 200 and was filmed at Cinespace Studios.

Farhad Safinia was the show’s creator and executive producer.
