Chicago-area native, actor Gary Sinise, has spent decades supporting military veterans, first responders, and their families. Now, a new documentary, The Ballad of Lieutenant Dan, explores how a memorable role in Forrest Gump helped inspire a lifelong commitment to serving others.
The documentary will be released November 10, 2026, on North American digital HD, DVD, cable, and satellite platforms through Freestyle Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group.
Directed by Steve Mitchell Beebe and produced by Bud Brutsman, The Ballad of Lieutenant Dan follows Sinise’s journey from acclaimed actor to humanitarian, tracing the experiences that led him to establish the Gary Sinise Foundation and dedicate much of his life to supporting America’s military community.
The film features personal reflections from Jay Leno, Tim Allen, Chip Foose, Mykelti Williamson, and fellow Chicago native Joe Mantegna, who share their perspectives on Sinise’s work and the relationships he has built along the way.
For Sinise, the character of Lieutenant Dan Taylor in the 1994 film Forrest Gump became far more than a memorable performance. His portrayal of a wounded Vietnam veteran helped forge a lasting connection with service members and veterans, ultimately inspiring a mission that would extend well beyond Hollywood.
Through his foundation, Sinise has supported wounded veterans, military families, first responders, and Gold Star families who have lost loved ones in military service. His guiding philosophy, “We can always do a little more,” has become a defining principle of that work.
But the documentary also reveals a deeply personal chapter in Sinise’s life. While continuing his commitment to helping others, he faced the devastating loss of his son, Mac, whose death brought profound grief to the Sinise family.
The film explores how the community Sinise spent years supporting became a source of strength for him during one of the most difficult periods of his life.
“The Ballad of Lieutenant Dan looks into the world of actor and humanitarian, Gary Sinise, and explores how his commitment to veterans and first responders created a community that supported him through a difficult period in his life,” said filmmaker Steve Beebe. “This is a story about selfless kindness and, I hope, will inspire all of us to do what we each can to uplift our friends, neighbors and communities.”
Sinise’s Chicago roots are an important part of his story. Raised in the Chicago suburbs, he co-founded Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Highland Park in 1974, helping build what would become one of the country’s most respected theater companies. His father, Bob Sinise, was a respected figure in Chicago’s film industry who operated his own commercial film production and editing business. Gary worked alongside his father early in his career, and the two eventually collaborated on the 1992 film Of Mice and Men, which Gary directed and starred in and Bob edited.
The Ballad of Lieutenant Dan brings together the actor’s professional accomplishments, his decades of humanitarian work, and the personal experiences that have shaped his life.
Freestyle Digital Media acquired the documentary’s video-on-demand distribution rights directly from the filmmakers.
