Four theatrical companies lead Jeff Citation nominees for June 7 awards

Bailiwick Repertory leads the 2003-2004 theatre season Jeff Citation Awards, to be presented June 7 at Park West before an expected audience of 700. The awards honor outstanding achievement for Chicago’s professional non-union theatres.

Vote toppers were Bailiwick Repertory (17), TimeLine Theatre Company (15), Circle Theatre (9) and Griffin Theatre Company (9).

During the April 1, 2003-March 31, 2004 Citations season, the 45-member Jeff Committee judged 96 productions from 44 producing organizations. Recommended were 30 productions from 19 producing organizations. The awards are non-competitive, and multiple recipients may receive awards in each category.

Outstanding Production-Play nominations went to Pegasus Players’ “Broadway Bound;” Strawdog Theatre Company’s “Detective Story;” Timeline Theatre’s “Hannah and Martin” and “The Lion in Winter;” Circle Theatre’s “In the Blood,” and Eclipse Theatre Company’s “Lost in Yonkers.”

Nominations in the outstanding Production-Musical or Revue category are shared by “Dr. Sex and Pinafore!” from Bailiwick Repertory, and “A Kurt Weill Review: Songs of Darkness and Light,” from Theo Ubique Theatre Company in association with Michael James.

MCs for the evening are actor/director David Cromer and Famous Door artistic director Marc Grapey. Last season they shared a Jeff Award for their co-direction of Famous Door Theatre’s “The Cider House Rules.”
