Filmmakers start first Evanston indie fest

Filmmakers Ines Sommer and Kathy Berger are seeking entries for Evanston’s Talking Pictures Film Festival, May 1-3, billed as a celebration of films “with a unique voice and point-of-view.”

The festival is an extension of the Evanston-based Reeltime screening series run by Sommer and Berger, which emphasizes discussion-based viewings of independent film.

“There is so much to gain from a film when you’re exchanging opinions with your neighbors, or the filmmaker, or representatives of organizations who work with issues featured in the film,” says Berger.

“This festival is about encouraging people to be more than just passive viewers, and to being open to ideas and perspectives they may not have considered before.”

Submission deadline is Jan. 30 and any length and genre is welcome.

Approximately 15 films will be selected for screening across three days, with Berger estimating around 1,000 attendees for the three days at main venues Northwestern University’s Block Cinema and Evanston’s Boocoo Cultural Center and Caf?.

A thematic sidebar that focuses on sustainability, organic food and agriculture, and the environment will complement the main competition.
