On Thursday, July 6th, noted Chicago Tribune Film Critic Michael Phillips will serve as Guest Chef for the Chicago-based nonprofit organization Guest House, whose mission is to provide safe, affordable, temporary lodging when medical patients need to stay close to the hospitals in Chicago.

Every Thursday evening, guest dinners are sponsored by a different person or company, and Phillips was inspired to volunteer after hearing about the organization’s life-changing work. Phillips’s meal is co-sponsored by his friend and fellow critic, Josh Larsen, co-host of WBEZ’s Filmspotting

Cooking and serving will occur between 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm at the Guest House, which is located at 1933 W. Polk St. in the Illinois Medical District neighborhood.

As Jan Kroeschell, Manager of Volunteers and Programming, shares, “The Guest House brings together volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to help our guests who are away from home and facing a difficult time. We are grateful to Michael and Josh for giving their resources to provide a dinner that will mean so much to the people we serve.”

Michael Phillips is known to many as the film critic at Chicago Tribune. He previously wrote about theater, movies, arts, and culture for the Los Angeles Times and other outlets. He has taught cinema studies and arts journalism nationwide and guest-hosts Filmspotting on Chicago Public Radio.

The Guest House builds community and healing by providing comfortable, affordable accommodation for patients and their families throughout their treatment when they must stay near the hospital in Chicago.  Guest House’s hospital partners include Rush University Medical Center, Stroger Hospital of Cook County, UI Health, and UChicago Medicine.  Guest House also has program partnerships with American Cancer Society, Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network, and the Road Home Program for Veterans and Their Families at Rush.

In a typical year, Guest House supports close to 700 families and delivers more than 12,000 nights of service.  Length of stay is determined by the patient’s needs, with no minimum or maximum. Guest House offers comfort and care to the community, reducing families’ stress when facing a medical crisis, especially if treatment requires them to be away from home.
