Disney developing NU prof’s teen sci-fi novel

With a slew of unproduced screenplays and an unpublished novel under her belt, Northwestern professor Kat Falls’ first published novel, the teen sci-fi “Dark Life,” landed a big release May 1 and a development deal at Disney announced this month.

“I spent years writing screenplays, only to have them optioned but never made into films,” says Falls.

“Now I’ve written a kids’ book and it has breezed through the development process without a hitch so far. But I’m still keeping my fingers crossed,” says Falls, the wife of Goodman Theatre artistic director Robert Falls.

Variety reported on April 6 that Disney had partnered with Gotham Group and Robert Zemeckis’s production company, ImageMovers, for Zemeckis to direct a film based on “Dark Life,” as the first installment of a planned franchise.

Scholastic Press publishes “Dark Life” May 1.
