Detroit’s Dan Yessian could become a music “Idol” if he wins the American Idol Songwriting contest

Detroit-based composer-producer Dan Yessian reluctantly agreed to the pleas of his son, Michael, company rep Helen Kaye to enter his song that they felt had “winner” written all over it.

That was mainly because the song, “I Believe in You,” which is perfectly in tune with contemporary sounds, “had been lying on the shelf for 10 years,” Yessian says.

Yessian’s unenthusiastic decision to enter has paid off?big time?as “I Believe” was voted one of the 20 songwriting finalists, out of a staggering 25,000 entries.

The prize-winning song will be performed by the vocalist winner on the May 20 “Idol 7” finale over Fox Broadcasting, and it will be included in his or her album, historically a big seller.

The $10,000 prize to the songwriter is “nice,” says the low-key, multi-award winning music house founder. “But more than the money, it would be the thrill of saying that, over the thousands of entries, we were the first place winner. It’s fun, it’s the ride, the pleasure of knowing people are giving us their support.
