DePaul presents free Kartemquin doc master classes

Master classes on documentary filmmakers by the experts — Kartemquin filmmakers, founder / artistic director Gordon Quinn, director Dinesh Sabu and director of editing / senior editor Leslie Simmer — is being presented Oct. 28-29 by DePaul’s School of Cinematic Arts for “Verite,” and it’s free and open to all.

The “Verite” weekend starts with a Friday 5 p.m. screening of Dinesh Sabu’s film, “Unbroken Glass,” in which after a silenced family history of mental illness, Sabu confronted the legacy of having a schizophrenic mother who died by suicide, the reality of growing up an orphaned immigrant, and the trauma of these events.

Following the screening will be discussions on mental illness and suicide in Asian communities follows, with professors from DePaul and University of Illinois, and on the making of “Unbroken Glass.”

In Saturday’s 10 a.m.-noon master class, Gordon Quinn will discuss the relationship between the director, cinematographer and editor, and how the experience of taking on the different roles can influence one’s documentary work.

Kartemquin’s award-winning editor, Leslie Simmer (“The Homestretch”), in her 1-4 p.m. master class will discuss editing documentaries and analyzing editing decisions at different points in a film’s edit.
