David Schwimmer reaffirms his commitment to Lookingglass Theatre

David Schwimmer, best known for his role as Ross on Friends, is reaffirming his commitment to Lookingglass Theatre Company, the Chicago-based theater he co-founded in 1988.

For Schwimmer, the theater holds a deep personal significance as both an artistic home and a place of creative risk-taking. By doubling down on his involvement, he aims to ensure Lookingglass continues to inspire, innovate, and thrive in Chicago’s vibrant arts scene.

After facing significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, the theater is embarking on a fresh chapter, and Schwimmer is stepping into a more active role to ensure its future.

Lookingglass, like many arts organizations, struggled with reduced ticket sales and donations during the pandemic. This prompted the company to temporarily pause productions in 2022 to reassess its operations. Now, the theater has reimagined its approach, focusing on sustainability while maintaining its reputation for innovative and ensemble-driven performances.

The updated strategy includes producing fewer but more focused shows, starting with the world premiere of Circus Quixote, running from January 30 to the end of March 2025. Additionally, the theater plans to expand its programming by using its newly renovated lobby space for cultural, educational, and community events. These renovations, supported by state grants and funding programs like Rebuild Illinois, aim to create a more engaging environment for patrons while securing the theater’s place as a cultural anchor in Chicago’s Magnificent Mile corridor.

Schwimmer, now a member of the theater’s board, is playing a key role in fundraising and strategic oversight. He emphasized that the theater’s mission — to create bold, exhilarating, and inclusive theatrical experiences– remains at the forefront. Schwimmer also highlighted Lookingglass’s commitment to reflecting the diversity of Chicago and broadening its audience base by making live performance accessible to people from all walks of life.

The challenges of recent years have also provided an opportunity for Lookingglass to rethink its long-term goals. Plans include producing two shows per season and exploring new revenue streams, such as co-productions and touring, to ensure financial stability.

At the reopening of the theater, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker underscored the importance of cultural institutions like Lookingglass, noting their role in driving civic, economic, and community revitalization.
