Danny DeVito gets ‘Stacked and Jacked’ for Jersey Mike’s new NFL campaign

Jersey Mike’s is heading into year two of its NFL partnership with a new campaign platform and one very unexpected franchise quarterback. Created with Highdive, Game Day Mike’s Way builds on last year’s “Eli vs. Danny” campaign, which introduced the rivalry between Danny DeVito and former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

This time, DeVito takes the field.

The campaign launches with “Stacked and Jacked: The Danny DeVito Story,” a mock sports biopic that imagines years of lifting Jersey Mike’s overstuffed subs transforming DeVito into an NFL-caliber quarterback.

The logic is impeccable, at least by sandwich-commercial standards.

All that meat, cheese, and toppings gave him a cannon for an arm.

When asked how he keeps his “golden arm” in shape, DeVito offers the training regimen every strength coach has apparently overlooked:

“Lift heavy sub, eat heavy sub.”

In the alternate reality created by Highdive, DeVito rockets to football stardom while Manning, whose actual NFL résumé includes two Super Bowl wins, can only watch from the sidelines. But you can watch below:

That reversal is the joke at the heart of the new platform.

Last year, Manning arrived as a Jersey Mike’s spokesperson tied to the brand’s NFL sponsorship, prompting DeVito to treat him as someone coming after his job. For year two, the roles have flipped. Manning may have taken Danny’s spokesperson territory, but Danny has now taken Eli’s field.

The campaign expands far beyond a single film. Jersey Mike’s says Game Day Mike’s Way is its most integrated campaign to date, spanning TV, online video, social, display, influencer work, brand activations and limited-edition products.

The mock-biopic format also plays directly into director Eric Appel’s comedic wheelhouse.

Appel has built a career around spoofing pop-culture forms, including faux movie trailers and projects such as Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Here, he treats DeVito’s transformation with the visual seriousness of a classic underdog sports movie, which only makes the premise more ridiculous.

And that is really the engine of the campaign.

Jersey Mike’s takes one of its core product messages — subs piled high with ingredients — and pushes it to an absurd conclusion: eat enough of them, lift enough of them, and maybe one day you too can replace Eli Manning.

For Manning, the good news is his records remain intact.

For now.
