Daniel Kyri gives heartfelt goodbye on last day of Chicago Fire

After more than seven years and eight seasons, Chicago native Daniel Kyri has officially wrapped filming on Chicago Fire. The actor, who has portrayed firefighter Darren Ritter since 2018, marked his final day on set with a heartfelt message to fans, cast, and crew.

Kyri confirmed on Instagram August 13 that he had filmed his last scenes, calling the experience “so humbling” and expressing deep gratitude to series creator Dick Wolf, the production team, writers, and his fellow actors. He reflected on the importance of playing Ritter, describing the character as a gay Black firefighter, a representation he said he wished he had seen growing up. The post also included a touching picture of his set chair with Daniel Kyri written in red, and his coat and hat.

News of Kyri’s exit was first reported earlier this year, when it was revealed that both he and co-star Jake Lockett (Sam Carver) would be leaving the NBC drama following Season 13, a decision tied in part to budget adjustments across the One Chicago franchise.

During his run, Kyri became a fan favorite for his portrayal of Ritter’s courage, loyalty, and grounded presence at Firehouse 51. The character was often the moral center in tense moments, bringing humanity and quiet strength to the fast-paced world of first responders.

Kyri’s departure leaves a noticeable gap. His farewell marks the end of a chapter for Chicago Fire and for viewers who connected deeply with Ritter’s journey.

Season 14 of Chicago Fire premieres October 1 on NBC.
