Columbia College hosts May-July YouTube Creator Institute

Columbia College Chicago is one of two sites nationwide, along with the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, for the new YouTube Creator Institute.

The program, housed in Columbia’s television department, trains students in production of digital media and promotion, and offers them access to industry leaders.

On campus and online courses cover scripting, cinematography, monetization strategies and social media tactics.  The program at Columbia runs May 31 to July 22.

Online voters will select finalists based on two-minute videos posted by applicants, with the school choosing 10 admitted students from among the finalists and announcing acceptances April 20.

The Creator Institute is part of YouTube Next, the company’s initiative to promote original content creation through a revenue sharing program.  YouTube announced YouTube Next after acquiring online video production company Next New Networks last week.

In a separate move, Columbia will host the Sundance Institute’s ShortsLab: Chicago, a $150, daylong program on May 7 that will offer short filmmakers techniques to hone their craft and promote their work.
