Collective Media pulls together a winning team for Purina Campaign

Derek Goldsmith, Founder/EP at Collective Media

Collective Media Productions (CMP) is revolutionizing the production and post-production industry by offering exceptional service through carefully assembled freelance teams.

This week, CMP released two significant content packages for Golin & Purina.

The projects involved celebrity-focused docu-style long forms and cut-downs across multiple cities, including extensive transcodes, clean-up, color, and editorial work. CMP assembled a seven-person team with decades of experience to handle these tasks efficiently and collaboratively, ensuring unlimited revisions and client satisfaction.

Founded by industry expert Derek Goldsmith in 2015, CMP’s distinctive approach begins with the bidding process, maintaining control and transparency throughout. By creating custom teams from a vast pool of top-tier talent, CMP maximizes budget efficiency and consistently delivers impressive results.

“We’ve redefined the post-production landscape for the modern era,” says Goldsmith. “Our remarkable success is due to the talent and dedication of the production and post-production crews who have been with us since the beginning. After sixty-five shoots and hundreds of post projects, I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t, helping me shape teams to meet the needs of production companies and brands.”

Goldsmith began in the industry as an intern at Filmworkers and spent 14 years at the company only leaving by merger with Carbon, where, as Executive Producer, he focused on developing their Live Action Department. In 2015, Goldsmith started Collective Media with a vision, and the company grew into it. “The company grew as it needed to grow. I’m a scrappy guy who just gets things done.”

CMP has collaborated with high-profile clients and agencies, successfully executing campaigns for brands like Purina and Nissan. During the COVID-19 pandemic, CMP perfected remote production models, achieving outstanding results for clients such as Johnson & Johnson, Lululemon, Verizon, and Whole Foods.

“I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved over the past two months for Purina & Golin,” said Goldsmith. “We had an absolute blast hand selecting a dream team for the post on two separate large docu-style campaigns for Purina and Purina Pro Plan that featured athletes like Michael Phelps, Lolo Jones, Livvy Dunn, Erin Andrews and Kyle Juszczyk alongside their dogs.”

“When we first got the board from the agency, I started to look through my resourcing rolodex of 2500+ editors, compositors, designers and colorists to see what reels and what software could compliment the large-scale vision for this package of broadcast and social content.”

Goldsmith was able to present the agency with not only a bid that was matching the budget for those deliverables, but an approach and methodology of a team that included editors, clean-up, color, audio, and a dedicated EP, all with decades of experience, that could remotely and through 4-wall, offer an 8-week flat back-and-forth for both Golin and the client with unlimited revisions as this content and story were shaped for the talent, agency, and client’s approval.

“As we got closer to production I decided to be on-set for anything that was needed to help the shoot go smoother,” Goldsmith continued. “I onboarded an amazing Executive Producer, Rene Steinkellner, enabling us to start the post-production portal, kick off all our independent contracts on Teams and make sure they had a virtual pow-wow about each days footage, so nothing was left un-asked.”

“I have been in this biz for a long time and I can say hands down this was one of my most fun projects I have worked on,” said Steinkellner. “The agency, the content, and the that team Megan and Derek assembled was so talented and we had so much fun creating these video’s and had a lot of laughs along the way.”

With AI transcriptions to start alongside the transcodes, they had the ECD and two editors shaping the story via text to dramatically simplify the 20TBs of footage. Mike Berg and Keith Kristiant worked alongside each other remotely and in 4-walls to play musical chairs with the ECD for the two weeks he was in town. Vince Patton, ECD at Golin was able to jump into each edit room, set looks in color in a third room, and visit Goldsmith to review remote paint work and audio mixing and records happening in other remote locations.

“Derek’s integrity, work ethic, and visionary approach to post-production were invaluable on the Purina Fueled By and For The Win productions,” said Megan Guerrant, SVP Executive Director at Golin. “Throughout, he was always one step ahead, anticipating cleanup needs before we even had approved rough cuts, and he knew exactly which artists were right for each piece of the project. Derek is a true team player and agency partner. Shaping long-form scripts from hours of interviews took time, but he never made us feel like we had overstayed our welcome. Each production is more than just another project for Derek. He treats it as a unique opportunity.”

“Being able to negotiate the team and flatten all the work out, took the budget and stress of money off the table. It was a pretty stress-free situation, much like producing post-production on a feature that had similar flat bid luxuries,” said Goldsmith.

“I thrive on efficiency and making every dollar count and get on screen. Whether it’s troubleshooting production needs on-set or finding creative solutions in the vfx and editing room, I’ve got you covered.”
