In a highly anticipated announcement on Tuesday, the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards nominations were dominated by three standout films: American Fiction, May December, and Past Lives, each earning five nods. But for Chicago cinephiles, the standout title belongs to the Chicago-produced film, We Grown Now.
The film received three nominations: Best Feature, Pat Scola for Best Cinematography and Stephanie Filo for Best Editing.
We Grown Now is a poignant American drama film written and directed by Minhal Baig. The drama took center stage at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) with its world premiere on September 8, 2023. Produced by Joe Pirro and Baig, the film boasts a stellar cast featuring Blake Cameron James, Gian Knight Ramirez, S. Epatha Merkerson, Avery Holliday, Ora Jones, Lil Rel Howery, and Jurnee Smollett.
The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of the Cabrini-Green housing complex, offering a compelling coming-of-age story that revolves around the lives of best friends Malik and Eric. As they navigate the challenges of adolescence within the confines of Cabrini-Green, the film explores themes of friendship, identity, and the transformative journey into adulthood.
Baig, known for her previous works exploring intimate and character-driven narratives, brings her unique storytelling style to We Grown Now. The film marks a significant addition to the cinematic landscape with its focus on the complexities of growing up in an urban setting, where social and economic factors shape the characters’ experiences.
