Chicago Fire honors deceased crew member Dale Hay

Hay

The latest episode of Chicago Fire, aired on January 24, left viewers with a poignant moment as it paid a surprise tribute to Dale Hay in a heartfelt display of remembrance.

Dale E. Hay Jr., a Chicago native, passed away on September 8, 2023. He was an IATSE 476 construction foreman working on the Chicago Fire set at Cinespace Film Studios.

As the Chicago Fire Season 9 Episode 2 drew to a close, just before the credits rolled, the screen flashed a simple yet profound title card: “In memory of Dale Hay.” The tribute, devoid of any accompanying photo, served as a touching acknowledgment of a life lost.

These tribute cards are a customary feature at the end of network dramas, often used to honor individuals who have had a meaningful connection to the show, either on or off-screen.

While NBC has not issued an official statement regarding the tribute, it is believed that Hay was well-known among those working on the show.

The delayed acknowledgment of Hay’s passing can be attributed to the production disruptions caused by two Hollywood strikes, which halted the filming of Chicago Fire Season 12 episodes. The January 17 season premiere marked the show’s return to television, making the recent episode only the second new installment since May 2023.

Though the extent of Hay’s connection to the cast remains uncertain, the decision to honor him underscores the camaraderie and respect within the Chicago Fire community.

This tribute follows previous losses experienced within the One Chicago universe. Notably, actor Treat Williams, who portrayed Benjamin “Benny” Severide, passed away last summer. Williams’ character, a former firefighter, shared history with Chief Wallace Boden, played by Eamonn Walker.
