Chicago Filmmakers presents Roy’s World: Barry Gifford’s Chicago (USA, 2020), by director and producer Rob Christopher with text written by Barry Gifford.
Barry Gifford is the author of more than forty works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, writing distinctly American stories for readers around the globe. Roy’s World follows Roy, coming-of-age on the gritty streets of 1950’s Chicago, whose experiences are inspired by Gifford’s own childhood. Through this surrogate, the viewer experiences a slice of Chicago history, from its pervasive municipal corruption to the dawn of the tumultuous 60’s. Fusing archival materials with animated sequences, spoken word, and an evocative jazz score by Jason Adasiewicz, Roy’s World presents an impressionistic portrait of a vanished world.

In a shining review, legendary filmmaker David Lynch praises the film by saying: “Barry Gifford is a killer… writer and I’ve got a lot of respect for him. His writing is pure and minimal and it sparks things and gets your imagination going. Roy’s World captures his childhood and that time in Chicago…”
