Chicago filmmaker Kamelya Alexan screens doc at MFF

Changing the Disciple

Chicago Producer/Director Kamelya Alexan is no stranger to the film festival world. Having an award winning short, Before the Fall screened around the world, filmmaking never stops. Her current project Changing the Disciple will be screening at the Midwest Film Festival ( MFF ) this Thursday, May 27th.

Changing the Disciple is a documentary short film that follows a reformed gang member named Shango Johnson who was raised in the Chicago South Side Englewood neighborhood.  Being influenced by gangs at a young age Shango soon rose to become a gang leader.  He went through his gang life knowing this isn’t the life for him and found his love for Yoga from his mentors.  He now teaches yoga and mindfulness back to Inglewood and inspires young kids every day.

The story was brought to Kamelya from producer Gina Kalish, owner of some of the most successful vegan restaurants in Chicago. After meeting Shango at a Chicago yoga class, Gina couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have his important story told to the world.

Changing the Disciple is already gaining some traction in the festival circuit and will officially be screened at the Midwest Film Festival in Chicago, IL on Thursday, May 27, 2021.
