Bugonia’s Yorgos Lanthimos brings surreal edge to Grubhub

Grubhub

Chicago-based Grubhub is heading to the Super Bowl for the first time, and it is doing so with one of the most distinctive filmmakers working today. According to The Hollywood Reporter, acclaimed Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos has directed a Super Bowl commercial for Grubhub, marking both the filmmaker’s and the brand’s debut on advertising’s biggest stage.

Lanthimos, whose work on films like Poor Things, The Lobster, and Bugonia has defined a singular brand of absurdist and surreal storytelling, brings that same off-kilter sensibility to the food delivery platform’s upcoming Big Game spot. A teaser released Monday makes that immediately clear, featuring stylized visuals and eccentric characters that feel unmistakablyLanthimos.

“This February, one food delivery app will finally put their mouth where their money is,” the teaser’s narrator declares, setting a tone that suggests Grubhub is aiming to redefine how the brand shows up culturally. Watch below:

While the full commercial remains under wraps ahead of Super Bowl Sunday, the move signals a new creative chapter for Grubhub, which was founded in Chicago and remains one of the city’s most prominent tech success stories. Rather than relying solely on celebrity cameos or broad comedy, the brand appears to be leaning into auteur-driven storytelling to stand out in an increasingly crowded Super Bowl ad landscape.

The collaboration may surprise casual viewers, but it fits neatly within Lanthimos’ own career arc. Before becoming a fixture on the global awards circuit, the director began his career in Greece making commercials, music videos, and experimental stage work. A return to advertising, even at Super Bowl scale, is well within his creative DNA.

The Big Game has increasingly become a showcase not just for brands, but for filmmakers willing to take risks. Grubhub’s decision to partner with Lanthimos suggests a desire to be remembered, not just seen.

The full spot is expected to debut during Super Bowl LX on February 8.
