Budweiser launches Apollo 11 promotion

Anheuser-Busch
offers beer at
the same price
that the team from
mission control
paid in 1969:
35 cents

Budweiser is offering drinkers a chance to celebrate Apollo 11’s successful return to earth in the same way that the crew from mission control did a half century ago: with 35-cent beers. Consumers can enjoy the discount via rebate through tomorrow at www.mybeerrebate.com.

The special price of the beer is based on a fifty-year-old audio recording of the team that guided the Apollo 11 Command Module Columbia safely back home after it completed the first lunar landing in history.

On July 24 at 12:49 a.m. (EDT), the spacecraft carrying astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin safely splashed down about 900 miles southwest of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. Upon learning of its successful return, the Houston-based group of engineers, mathematicians, and rocket scientists that had assisted the thimble-shaped galactic vehicle began to celebrate.

When one of the crew asks, “where are you all gonna go drink a little,” someone mentions “an open house in Ellington” with “35¢ beers.”

Today, the Columbia is on display in the Smithsonian Museum.

The idea for the online promotion and corresponding video featured below were hatched out of mcgarrybowen’s New York office, which also handled the execution.
