Ben Vereen co-stars in Houlihan’s debut feature comedy “Tapioca” adapted from his stage show

Veteran stage and screen actor and theatre producer Mike Houlihan’s debut feature as writer, producer and star is truly a family affair.

Houlihan’s son Paddy is director and co-writer. His other son Bill is co-writer and is producing with him. His wife, Mary Carney, of 80’s soap “Ryan’s Hope,” has a role in the film.

“It’s about a standup comic who’s famous for doing used car commercials,” Houlihan explained. “He’s truly a miserable human being, until a StreetWise vendor [Ben Vereen] puts a hex on him and sends him into the world of the homeless, where he has to experience what these guys go through.”

“He gets a second chance to learn the inherent dignity of all men,” Houlihan continued. “It’s a redemptive story with a strong social justice message. I feel good about doing it because I know I’m doing the right thing.”

Houlihan is known for his one-man show, “Goin’ East on Ashland,” and for directing and producing Malachy and Frank McCourt’s internationally renowned stage show “A Couple of Blaguards.”
