BBDO, Burnett, DDB score “best of show” honors at Chicago Creative Club Awards

Call it the battle of the big agencies shooting it out for honors at the recent second annual Chicago Creative Club Awards show. Four big agencies won 29 of the 32 categories of awards, while Leo Burnett won half, with 16 prizes mostly for Altoids gum.

DDB brought home seven Bricks (the award trophy) for Anheuser-Busch/Budweiser and Young & Rubicam won six awards mainly Miller Brewing. BBDO won three for Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit gum but earned the People’s Choice award for its Juicy Fruit spot, “Office Flage.”

“Best of Show” for print was added to Leo Burnett awards loot for Altoids Gum, while DDB was awarded “Best of Show” in radio for the Bud Light Real Men of Genius campaign.

The big agencies swept up the awards in the important categories of television, television advertising craft, radio and copywriting.

The only three small agency winners, Downtown Partners, Firehouse Communications and Hadrian’s Wall, fell into the categories of illustration and sales promotion.

The jury was comprised of creative executives from big and otherwise well known agencies, such as Jamie Barrett, CD/Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco, and New York-based Kevin Proudfoot, Weiden & Kennedy, Shelley Lanham, Draft, and Donna Weinham, BBDO.

Awards were presented by the Club’s three founders: McDonald’s creative head, Marlena Peleo-Lazar, DDB’s U.S. chief creative officer Bob Scarpelli; and Leo Burnett’s deputy chief creative officer Mark Tutssel.

Team members who worked on a winning entry were inducted into the Chicago Creative Club.

Leo Burnett designed the unusual trophy of a masonry brick for the 2003 inaugural awards. The brick pays tribute to the hard-working city and symbolizes the building of a creative community.

Comedian Michael Ian Black (star of “Ed”) MC’d the black tie evening was held Sept. 29 at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The Chicago Creative Club is a partnership with the Chicago Advertising Federation to recognize the best in advertising and design creativity.
