Malik Bader’s debut feature “Street Thief” will get a cable and DVD release early next spring from A&E Indie Films, which co-produced and released hit documentaries “Jesus Camp,” “Murderball,” and “Rock School.”
Those documentaries got theatrical runs from third party distributors to accompany TV and home video, a component that hasn’t been set up yet for “Street Thief.”
Bader is crafting a release strategy with sales agent Andrew Herwitz of Film Sales Company (“Born Into Brothels,” “My Architect,”) and Molly Thompson at A&E Indie, who began courting the film after seeing its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
“We’re working on whether it’s better to put all of our effort into an exciting cable premiere or if theatrical will help that release,” Bader said.
“We’re coming up with, not necessarily what’s best for me monetarily, but what’s best for the film,” Bader continued. “We’re looking for the way to create the biggest excitement and put it in the largest possible arena.”
“Street Thief,” a “filmed record” of the life and work of commercial burglar Kaspar Karr, was produced by Malik Bader and his brother Sam Bader through their Bader Brothers Pictures along with editor Nadav Kurtz, and writer Derrick Grahn.
Ken Seng (“Strange Fruit”) shot. Music by Phirefones (“Bye Bye Berlusconi!”). Production designer Merje Veski. Ed Koziarski was line producer.
Malik Bader will be on screens nationwide this fall in the Newmarket Films release “Death of a President,” winner of the international critics award at the Toronto Film Festival. Bader plays a Muslim activist suspected in the presidential assassination.
