Ayo Edebiri in talks to write and star in Barney movie

In a groundbreaking move, Ayo Edebiri, the Emmy-winning star of The Bear, has been selected to pen the screenplay for a live-action “Barney” movie. Edebiri is also in discussions to take on a starring role in the film, which is a collaborative effort between Mattel Films, A24, and Daniel Kaluuya‘s 59% Productions.

The project aims to reimagine the iconic purple dinosaur, Barney, who became a global sensation with the 1992 debut of Barney & Friends. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the film is expected to offer a fresh perspective that resonates with both longtime fans and new audiences. Producer Robbie Brenner hinted at a “completely new approach” to the beloved character.

Daniel Kaluuya, known for his roles in Get Out and Nope, expressed enthusiasm about revisiting Barney, emphasizing the character’s enduring message of love. He highlighted the opportunity to explore whether Barney’s message of “I love you, you love me” can withstand the test of time.

Edebiri’s involvement adds a new layer of anticipation to the project. Beyond her acclaimed performance in The Bear, she has showcased her versatility in films like Theater Camp and Bottoms, as well as lending her voice to animated features such as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

The collaboration between Mattel Films, A24, and Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions signals a bold and unexpected reimagining of Barney. With Edebiri at the helm of the screenplay—and potentially starring—the project is poised to blend nostalgia with a fresh, contemporary perspective. Given her sharp wit, unique storytelling style, and ability to balance humor with heartfelt emotion, audiences can anticipate a Barney film that challenges expectations while staying true to the character’s core message of love and friendship.
