Mind blown. If there was one trailer at San Diego Comic-Con that left Hall H collectively questioning reality, it was Apple TV+’s Dark Matter.
The streaming service kicked off its Hall H presentation with the first trailer for Season 2 of the acclaimed sci-fi thriller, confirming that Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly will return when the 10-episode season premieres Aug. 28.
Based on Blake Crouch’s bestselling novel, Dark Matter has become one of television’s smartest explorations of the multiverse, not as a superhero playground, but as an emotional examination of identity, regret and the lives we might have lived.
Season one followed physicist Jason Dessen (Edgerton) after he was abducted into an alternate version of his own life while walking home through the streets of Chicago. What began as scientific wonder quickly evolved into a desperate fight to return to his wife Daniela (Connelly) and son Charlie, navigating an ever-expanding maze of alternate realities.
The new trailer makes one thing immediately clear:
Finding home was only the beginning.
Season two, which was filmed at The Fields Studio, picks up with the Dessen family attempting to rebuild their lives in what appears to be a safe reality. That peace proves short-lived as Jason’s obsession with the Box—the mysterious device capable of traversing infinite realities—pulls the family back into increasingly dangerous worlds.
The footage teases a season that appears even larger in scope than its predecessor, balancing intimate family drama with the dizzying possibilities of infinite universes. Amanda (Alice Braga) and Ryan (Jimmi Simpson) continue their search for home, while Leighton (Dayo Okeniyi) pursues his increasingly dangerous vision of creating a perfect world across the multiverse. Rather than relying solely on spectacle, the teaser doubles down on the emotional consequences of infinite choice—a theme that has always separated Dark Matter from many of its science-fiction contemporaries.
Hall H attendees also learned the series is expanding beyond television.
Launching alongside the new season is “Dark Matter: The Official Podcast,” hosted by Crouch and executive producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry. Episodes will debut weekly alongside the series and feature conversations with cast members, filmmakers and scientific experts exploring the show’s multiverse concepts, production and adaptation from Crouch’s celebrated novel.
Crouch once again serves as creator, showrunner, writer and executive producer, with the series produced by Sony Pictures Television for Apple TV+.
If the Season 2 trailer is any indication, Dark Matter isn’t content simply revisiting alternate realities.
It’s diving even deeper into them.
