Apple TV+ releases haunting trailer for new Chicago series Shining Girls

Shining Girls

Apple TV+ has released the haunting trailer for upcoming series Shining Girls, filmed in Chicago last summer, starring Elizabeth Moss, Wagner Moura, Jamie Bell, and Phillipa Soo

In the series, Moss plays Kirby Mazrachi a victim of an attack by serial killer Harper Curtis (Jamie Bell), who teams with a reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times who is out to expose him.

A bit of backstory, drifter Curtis finds a key to a house in Depression-era Chicago that opens to other times. But it comes at a cost. He has to kill the shining girls: bright young women who burn with potential, in order to keep going.

At the urging of the house, Harper inserts himself into the lives of these various shining girls, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. He’s the ultimate predator, vanishing without a trace into another time after each murder — until one of his victims survives.

And Moss’ Kirby is that survivor, the last of the “shining girls.” After Harper’s failed attack on her in 1989 Chicago, Kirby wants revenge and starts to hunt him through time. To accomplish that, she joins forces with Sun-Times reporter Dan Velasquez (Wagner Moura), who covered the case.

The project has been ongoing for several years. In May 2013, it was announced that MRC and Appian Way had bought the television rights. And it was finally in July, 2020, that Apple announced it had given the direct-to-series order for the project.  In February 2021, Wagner Moura was cast to lead opposite Moss.

The 44-year-old Brazilian-born Moura will play Sun-Times reporter Dan Velasquez. Moura is best known to American audiences for his starring role in the Netflix series Narcos, in which he played drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. He also starred opposite Matt Damon and Jodie Foster in the 2013 film Elysium.

In addition to starring, Moss will executive produce through Love & Squalor Pictures alongside Lindsey McManus. Leonardo DiCaprio will executive produce alongside Jennifer Davidson. Author Lauren Beukes and Alan Page Arriaga will also serve as executive producers on the project.

The series will be adapted for television and executive produced by Silka Luisa, who will also serve as showrunner.

The Shining Girls air date is April 29th on Apple TV+
