Andy Richter directs monsters, ghouls and villains for STORY

Director Andy Richter at STORY, teamed up with Quality Meats Creative, and 11 Dollar Bill to create three brilliantly funny spots for Regal Cinemas to drive home the point that movies are better seen at the theater.

Andy Richter, who is best known as the sidekick for Conan O’Brien, has clearly found his calling as a commercial director with STORY. It’s no secret that the key to comedy is… timing. So who better than Andy in the director’s chair! Combine that with the talented creatives at Quality Meats, and the VFX and editing by 11 Dollar Bill and we have our Reel Ad of the Week… x 3, because I cannot decide which of the three spots I enjoyed the most.

Here’s the three-way tie for our Reel Ad of the Week

We will be talking with Andy Richter later this week but meanwhile we have reached out to Cliff Grant, executive producer at STORY, to tell us a bit about the behind the scenes on the three spots.

How did Andy win this job? What was it that convinced the creatives?

I think it was Andy’s charm and incredible ideas that blew them away, along with his comedy chops!

Why do you think they chose to film in Chicago?

It’s the home town of Quality Meats and STORY, we have some of the best talent in the country here and the crews are incredible to work with.  No better place to work!

How closely did Andy work with the effects team to make sure the effects worked to further the comedy?

11 Dollar Bill did the VFX and Goran Milosavljevic did the practical SFX. Andy was very involved in working with the both the SFX Props person and the VFX Post house, making certain that we provided them with what they needed to accomplish the effects. He worked with them to determine how much puke, how far it shot and what color/consistency it should be. He was involved in each scenario.

Was Andy involved in the edit?

11 Dollar Bill did the editing. Andy would get cuts and review them then send back his notes on what he thought would make them better and those suggestions were incorporated into the cut.

What was the main goal here, from an executional standpoint? Did the monsters, ghouls and villains need to come across as real ‘movie’ archetypes?

Andy felt pretty strongly that he didn’t want any of these characters to be like the girl from The Ring or Sylvester Stallone as Rambo he really felt they had to be amalgamation of a number of different characters.  So he worked with Brian and Gordy to create the perfect combo.  Each character really came to life when Anthony Kosar and the folks at Kosart Studios brought their bag of tricks!
