Advertising and cultural experts present new ideas at Oct. 27-29 4As conference

Leading local industry speakers combine with professors of prestigious universities to bring new thinking and global overviews to Advertising That Works, a three-day conference Oct. 27-29 at the Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier.

Some 650 guests are expected at the 2nd such Chicago conference, a joint effort of the 4As Chicago Council, chaired by retired agency owner Bud Browning, in cooperation with New York-based Assn. of National Advertisers.

The opening gala Oct. 27 kicking off the conference is a reception and screening of the 2004 Cannes Lions commercials Wednesday, Oct. 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. This will be the exclusive Chicago screening of the international winners’ reels of commercials, print and Web designs.

On Thursday, Oct. 28, 9 a.m. to noon, “Academia Challenges Advertising Conventional Wisdom” brings together professors from various disciplines from Harvard, Duke, Oxford, and Northwestern’s Kellogg School to present their views on consumer targeting, or where cultures are going in terms of different population groups.

Also on Oct. 28, a panel discussion on Advanced TV (video on demand, TiVo, broadband media) features Tim Hanlon,

Chairman of the 4As Advanced TV committee (Starcom Mediavest’s SVP/Director of Emerging Contacts) and Barbara Bacci-Mirque, SVP/ANA, and an industry champion on this topic.

“Advertisers Speak to New Challenges in Marketing, with industry speakers discussing issues that generate an impact on the changing role of agencies, from 1 to 5 p.m.

The 2004 Media Auction, from 5 to 8 p.m., is a silent and live auction of broadcast, print and alternative media, as well as valuable non-media items such as tickets to major sports events.

On Friday, Oct. 29, how-to ideas on “How to Get a Job in Advertising” will be shared by top agency professionals, from 9 a.m. to noon.
