The upcoming action-thriller Alabama Girl will film in Chicago and Birmingham, Alabama this winter, according to Deadline.

Alabama Girl is based on a poem by Shaquita Smith (NCIS:New Orleans, Gravesend), written in 2008 which addressed her traumatic childhood experience with abuse and abandonment. Inspired by her experiences, the film, written by Cassandra Mann (Tough Love: Los Angeles, Tough Love: Atlanta) is about Angela Davis (Shaquita Smith), a former military agent set on a deadly quest in Wetumpka, Alabama to find and rescue her younger sister after she was kidnapped and forced into sex trafficking.

Christopher A. Nolen (Zodiac Sign, My Online Valentine, Merry Switchmas) will direct. He will produce alongside Smith, with her production company Quita Films.

Nolen excitedly confirmed the news on his Twitter:

Once the news was shared by Deadline and confirmed by Nolen, Smith joined in the festivities and shared on her social media as well:

Excited to share that the cat’s out of the bag regarding this super secret project, Smith shared the same Deadline screenshot on her Instagram and said,

“Verified. Y’all ready for a female action-thriller starring yours truly! So excited that we are officially birthing this feature film!! Shout out to my entire team and everyone thats making this possible. So….@mrchristopheranolen let’s do it!!!”

Eager to share the project with the world, Smith teased her role when she shared a tweet about it back in December 2021, saying “can’t wait for you guys to see what I’m up to next” and hashtagged “AlabamaGirl”

Smith also has an upcoming series on AMC Networks streamer ALLBLK where she plays “Charm City Awakening’s” shopkeeper Jordan on Wicked City, from executive producers Tressa “Azarel” Smallwood and Donte Lee, which will debut this winter. The series follows five urban witches who push their supernatural powers to new heights after uncovering dark secrets and accidentally entering the world of the forbidden.
