34th Onion City Experimental Film Festival announces programs

Chicago Filmmakers, the presenting organization of the Onion City Experimental Film Festival, is pleased to announce an exciting line-up of special programs for its 34th edition, running April 4 – April 14.

“To complement the fresh, pensive, and explosive works that you will see in the competition programs, this year’s collection of special programs revisit the history of experimental film and video by showcasing newly restored works, rare prints, and a monograph of a pioneering video artist,” says Nicky Ni, Onion City programmer.

Opening the festival is the newly restored TOUTE UNE NUIT (A WHOLE NIGHT) from director Chantal Akerman, presented in partnership with Cine-File on Thursday, April 4 at the Gene Siskel Film Center 164 N State St. Akerman’s rarely screened and recently restored urban nocturne, TOUTE UNE NUIT, foregrounds small gestures as it captures the shape of solitude itself.

In addition to the exciting opening night partnership with Cine-File, Onion City is also partnering with the Chicago Film Society, Center for Concrete and Abstract Machines (CCAM), Public Works Gallery, and Nightingale Projects to bring an exciting weekend of special programs to festival goers.

On Friday, April 5 at Public Works Gallery 2141 W North Ave, Onion City Film Festival and Center for Concrete and Abstract Machines (CCAM) co-present [We Don’t Know Yet] What a Cinema Can Do: A Night of Live Sound and Moving Imagea program exploring expanded cinema.

The Chicago Film Society will honor the work of Chicago artist and educator Shellie Fleming at Chicago Filmmakers (1326 W Hollywood Ave) on Saturday, April 6 with the program Left-Handed Memories: The Films of Shellie Fleming.

Finally, closing the festival at the Chicago Filmmakers Firehouse Cinema, on Sunday, April 7, Onion City, Nightingale Projects, and Video Data Bank co-present Tom Rubnitz: Community Drag Theater, a retrospective program curated by Emily Eddy, spotlighting the works of Chicago-born filmmaker Tom Rubnitz.

Onion City’s full slate of competition programs will be announced soon. Tickets for all events are available on the Onion City website
