25 local films screen at CUFF, Oct. 29-Nov. 2

UIC professor and two-time Independent Spirit Award nominee Jennifer Montgomery’s “Deliver,” is one 25 local films featured in the Chicago Underground Film Festival Oct. 29-Nov. 2.

The 15th annual CUFF showcases 120 films from Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan and hosts the 17th annual IFP Filmmakers Summit, all taking place at the Viaduct Theatre.

Montgomery was long fascinated by John Boorman’s classic “Deliverance,” but troubled by its portrayal of gender roles.

Determined to mine the “differing role of women in relation to nature and violence,” Montgomery created “Deliver,” a scene-by-scene remake of “Deliverance” featuring an all-female cast.

Montgomery and several other filmmakers play characters patterned after the original film, but also based on themselves, urban academics canoeing up the Beaverkill River in the Catskills.

  • Owen Lowery’s documentary, “An Alternative to Slitting Your Wrist,” on Oct. 30 follows the filmmaker’s yearlong journey to do one thing a week that he’d always dreamed of doing.
  • Jennifer Reeder’s experimental feature “Accidents At Home and How They Happen” Nov. 1 follows the events leading up to the suicide of an Ohio research scientist.
  • Local shorts in CUFF include Alexander Rojas’ Slamdance-featured story of a Mexican skate punk, “Tripp,” in the “Urban Artifacts” program, Oct. 30.
  • Marty Shea’s fundamentalism satire,”Literally,” in the “Restless Mind” program, screens Nov. 2.

The $20 admission covers the opening night film, “Anywhere USA,” directed by Chusy Haney-Jardine, a commercial director from Asheville, N.C., and after party at the Beat Kitchen, 2100 W. Belmont to hear the Latin Pop Psychedelic Sounds of Alla and rock out with Judson Claibourn.
