2019 Academy Awards Review

Colin Costello
recounts the thrill
passion, and spectacle
of Hollywood’s
biggest night
of the year

There’s no way to prepare for the spectacle that is the Oscar celebration in Hollywood.

Frankly, I was blown away.

The, pomp, the limos, the security and the enormous amount of international press – the cameras, the microphones, the reporters, the interviews – multiply the thrill of celebrities walking the red carpet.

This is the big show. No two ways about it.

On TV we see the smiles and the champagne, but what the medium does not capture (and how could it?) is the genuine nervousness and angst among those nominated.

“Will I win? Is tonight the night I get to give my speech? My heels are killing me.”

When actress Olivia Coleman won for The Favourite, she quipped to her children at home that this may never happen again.”

And you had better believe that is on every celebrity’s mind from Willem Dafoe to winner Spike Lee (congrats, Spike) as they pause for paparazzi, working their way to their seats after a woman on a PA system grows gradually aggressive, ordering people to move it.

Then you see Queen perform live…

I will provide a first-hand account of the sensation later this week, but
for now, here are the evening’s winners.
