Colin Costello

SCREENWRITER/ADMAN COLIN COSTELLO, who’s been living in LA working in advertising and writing screenplays for the past 18 months, is back home for a visit and will be a special guest at the Chicago Screenwriters Network’s Sunday, June 1 meeting.

The former CSG president, who has several comedy screenplays in development, will share inside Hollywood industry info that could help speed members scripts into sales.

Featured speakers for the evening are director John Klein and screenwriter/DP Ben Kurstin of Glass City Films, producers of the post-apocalyptic horror movie “Chrysalis.” They successfully raised the budget on Kickstarter. Linda Frothingham of Chicagohollywood.com will interview the duo about the problems of making an indie horror film.

At the Blue 1647, 1647 S. Blue Island in Pilsen, 6:15 p.m.

IN CELEBRATION OF ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY Oct. 9-23, the Chicago International Film Festival is partnering with Ch. 11 to present a different film each month from its mammoth collection of features.  First up May 29 is 2002’s “Sister Helen,” by directors Rebecca Cammisa and Rob Fructman, airing at 10 p.m.

IN MEMORIAM. Wayne Juhlin, a versatile voice talent, successful commercial copywriter and radio broadcaster died of a heart attack in his home in April.  He was 77.

“A remarkable talent,” said Orkin. “He had a fantastic sense of humor, very dry and droll.”

A SAG AFTRA member for 35 years, Mr. Juhlin began his radio career in 1973 hosting an overnight talk show and moving to WFYR-FM he co-hosted a show with his wife, Sandi, known as Penny Lane.  They had been together for 44 years, married for 36.

As a voice actor, Mr. Juhlin did a remarkable imitation of Mayor Richard J. Daley that led to a comedy album of him playing the role of the mayor.  He also contributed to Dick Orkin’s classic radio comedy series.

“A remarkable talent,” said Orkin. “He had a fantastic sense of humor, very dry and droll.”

Mr. Juhlin is survived by his wife, five children, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A celebration of his life is being planned for this summer.

INSIDE REEL CHICAGO.  A vicious virus invaded the Reel’s computer, depositing a massive 65,000 Emails, an insane number created by triple entries of each Email. After calling in a tech and spending hours painfully eliminating them, my Inbox was finally barren.

The downside, however, was that recent Emails were also deleted. If you have sent us Emails with important and timely information, could you please resend them.

And after a decade of Reel writing on a faithful PC, we’re finally entering the Mac world. The new iMac is our brave new approach to the second half of the year that’s supposed to be the ad/film industry’s best in five years.

We need your news. Large company or small, gather up your news –and send them off to ruth@reelchicago.com.
