“We did ourselves proud last night,” says Tom Duff, AICE Chicago chapter president, “not only in award-winning but in putting on a great show” – the 15th annual AICE Awards at Navy Pier with an audience of 500.
Chicago had had three top winners out of the Awards’ 33 categories.
Best of Chicago was awarded to Beast’s Angelo Valencia for DigitasLBi spot for Whirlpool.
The Colonie won twice: Brian Sepanik for GrubHub / Tandem, Inc., in the Dialog / Monolog / spoken Word category and Keith Kristinat for 71 Degrees North / Chevy Trucks in the Spec Spot category.
Cutters’ New York-based Steve Bell won for NHL/Baby Bear’s Porridge in the Broadcast Promotion category.
Best in Show went to Andy Rafael Barrios. VFX supervisor and lead Flame artist of A52, San Francisco for a 2-minute animated history of the products and innovations from Honda, created by LA’s RPA (Rubin Postaer & Associates).
“Being part of the show and being recognized felt great,” says Beast managing director Peter Hullinger. “The win was a team effort for our Chicago companies, Beast, Company 3 and Method.
“In terms of the event, it gave people who came here from other cities a sense of our Chicago community, showing what type of people we are and the support we have for advertising and production.”
Editor Terry Kaney, formerly of Avenue Edit, was inducted into the AICE’s Hall of Fame in recognition for his career achievements and impact on the Chicago post production industry.
Chicagoans also led in the first-time national awards for the Camp Kuleshow trailer competition. Cutters’ assistant editor David Rubin for Editing and Mike Regan, assistant at Another Country, won Audio Assistant. New York’s Michael Marciano of P.S. 260, won Graphic Design.
Chicago hosts the AICE show every three years, rotating with New York and Los Angeles, “so we take a lot of pride in how we put it on,” says Utopic’s partner/editor Craig Lewandowski, one of the three national Awards Committee members and also a Curatorial Committee member.
“We’re a great community and we all pull for one another, so we can feel proud not only of our winners but the great work represented in all the national categories,” he says.
“What’s also encouraging is such having a good agency turnout as we got last night for the show,” he adds. “It means so much to AICE to have their support.”
Agency sponsors for the event included Ogilvy, FCB Chicago, Leo Burnett, OKRP, Energy BBDO, mcgarrybowen, Cavalry and DDB. Additional sponsors were Beast, Cinesys, Company 3, Method, The Colonie, Hootenanny, The Mill, Mix Kitchen and Nolo Digital Film.
Lewandowski thanked Peter Hullinger and Beast for their graphics work, the Beast’s Kendall Fash for planning the event and Cutters’ Craig Duncan, national AICE president and Tom Brassil for producing the presentations.
