The New York Times has named its “Best TV Series of 2023.” Among some of the expected shows such as Succession, Beef, Reservation Dogs and The Last of Us, Chicago-made series had a major showing.

Given that this was a year marked by challenges in TV production due to the strikes, The Bear, Somebody Somewhere, and South Side stood out as series with compelling storylines, production and acting.

“The Bear” (FX): A Feast of Dysfunction and Hospitality

FX’s restaurant dramedy The Bear has secured its place as a must-watch series. Initially premiering in 2022, the show leveled up in 2023, exploring the volcanic dysfunction within a central family and celebrating the care and feeding of guests as a quasi-spiritual calling.

The series, available for streaming on Hulu, offers a unique blend of humor, drama, and a deep dive into the complexities of familial relationships. Here’s a clip from the stand-out Christmas episode:

“Somebody Somewhere” (HBO): Heartwarming Duos and Slice-of-Life Brilliance

HBO’s Somebody Somewhere brings together friendships, queer life, and cabaret music. As audiences continue to seek diverse and engaging content, this show stands out as a prime examples of how television can cater to a wide range of tastes.

“South Side” (Max): A Hilarious Journey Through Chicago’s Eccentricities

South Side, available on Max, delivered its final season in December 2022, solidifying its place as one of the funniest shows of the year. Set on the South Side of Chicago, the series expanded a workplace comedy into a fantastical universe of eccentrics, scammers, and hapless police and politicians. Despite its cancellation in 2023, South Side remains a gem for its fully developed world and a high jokes-per-minute rate.

As the year comes to a close, these TV shows have left an indelible mark on audiences, proving that even in the face of industry challenges, exceptional storytelling and compelling characters continue to thrive. The New York Times chose wisely.
