The eagerly anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) miniseries, Ironheart, has been hit with yet another significant delay, leaving fans waiting longer than expected for its debut on Disney+.
According to reports from The Direct, Marvel recently filed a listing for the Ironheart series premiere with the U.S. Copyright Office. The listing indicates a projected debut date of September 3, 2025. While the date is labeled as “projected,” it suggests that Marvel has no intention of releasing the limited series before late summer 2025. Neither Marvel Studios nor Disney have officially confirmed this release date.
This delay follows a previous postponement that pushed the Ironheart series from its initial late-year release in 2024 to a later, unspecified date. However, a subsequent update to Marvel’s release calendar in September removed Ironheart from the 2024 schedule entirely.
This calendar shuffle coincided with ongoing strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) that have affected the Hollywood industry since May and July, respectively. The SAG-AFTRA strike is still ongoing.
Ironheart wrapped in Chicago last November. Crews were seen all over town for 7 days of location filming on the series that began filming in mid-June at its Marvel home-base in Atlanta.
The Chicago portion of filming is expected to reveal the backstory of main character Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne.) The storyline follows the character Riri, a young black woman from the south side of Chicago. Riri is an MIT engineer with a genius IQ, who builds her own Iron Man armor. We got our first glimpse of the character Riri Williams in two Wakanda Forever trailers as she builds that first suit and gets her technology right.
Insiders in the entertainment industry have suggested that the primary reason for Ironheart’s extensive delay is Marvel’s desire to synchronize the series with the release of Don Cheadle’s upcoming film, Armor Wars. This film centers around James “Rhodey” Rhodes, also known as War Machine, and shares thematic ties with Ironheart as both stories have connections to the Iron Man franchise.
In Ironheart, the titular character, Riri Williams, is inspired by Tony Stark to create her own armored suit. However, as of now, Armor Wars has not received an official release date.
The character made her live-action debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where she fought alongside Shuri (Letitia Wright) and the warriors of Wakanda, introducing fans to her origin story. Dominique Thorne portrayed the character in her MCU debut and is expected to reprise the role in Ironheart. Anthony Ramos also stars in Ironheart as Parker Robbins/The Hood, an ally of the titular character. Robbins possesses a hood that grants him access to dark arts and magic. The cast also includes Jim Rash, known for Captain America: Civil War, and Lyric Ross from This Is Us.
Ironheart is scheduled to consist of six episodes and is part of the MCU’s Phase Five. Filming for the series took place between May and November of the previous year, with directors Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes each overseeing three episodes. The series was created by Chinaka Hodge, renowned for her work on the Netflix horror mystery-thriller, The Midnight Club.
Marvel fans eager to follow Riri Williams on her superhero journey will now have to exercise patience, as the Ironheart series is set to premiere on Disney+ on September 3, 2025, pending any further delays.
