For anyone in need of audio for a project, high-quality audio equipment at a reasonable price has been somewhat challenging until now.
Eben Carlson’s White Gold Sound System is committed to bridging the gap by offering the opportunity to rent, buy and sell high-quality audio equipment.
Musician, writer, and artist Carlson, who moved here from Seattle five years ago, started amassing “a little bit of vintage and new” audio equipment by to record his own music.
“I decided to buy equipment to see if it could make a little money, as well. I’ve done well so far with rentals and business is growing every month,” he said.
White Gold specializes in old mikes and pre-amps used for recording, some amplifiers and a vintage percussion collection, such an esoteric, 1920’s Ludwig Black Beauty snare drum.
“We have all the gear needed for voiceover or post sound, he added, such as a Chandler Summing Mixer that allows you to take multiple complex tracks and mix them as though you’re in a studio with a huge mixing board.”
“Digital is very accurate, but it can be a little sterile sometimes for some people’s ears. What we try to do is acquire affordable analog equipment that users can put in front of their computers so that they’ll have the best of both worlds,” he said.
Carlson estimates his inventory investment of “a little bit of vintage and new” is $75,000.
He emphasizes the warmth of analog audio, a warmth that is sometimes lost with the new technology.
“The change in the recording industry in the last few years has allowed more recording at home, which I think is fantastic. But the quality of recording suffers. To achieve great recordings, you need mikes and pre-amps that are quite expensive, and there’s no program on the computer that works like that.
“What we try to do is work with people so that they can afford to use those same instruments or tools they’d have access to in an expensive studio.”
Toward that end, White Gold offers flexible payment plans?discounts, rental packs, and special deals for members of NARAS, EARS, ASCAP and BMI.
