Netflix has set October 3 for the premiere of Monster: The Ed Gein Story, the third installment in Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s hit anthology. This season, Charlie Hunnam trades in his biker leathers from Sons of Anarchy for a chilling turn as Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein, the man whose real-life crimes inspired Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs.

Known as the “Butcher of Plainfield,” Gein confessed to murdering two women in the 1950s and desecrating countless graves, creating trophies from human remains. Netflix’s new posters reveal Hunnam nearly unrecognizable in the role, embodying the mild-mannered recluse who hid a house of horrors that redefined the American nightmare.

The cast includes Laurie Metcalf as Gein’s domineering mother, Augusta; Tom Hollander as Alfred Hitchcock; Olivia Williams as Alma Reville; Addison Rae; Charlie Hall; Suzanna Son; and Lesley Manville. The Monster anthology has already captivated audiences with its seasons on Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez brothers; next up, Season 4 will tackle the story of Lizzie Borden.

The inaugural season, titled Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, focused on the life of Jeffrey Dahmer, the infamous Milwaukee serial killer who murdered 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991. Starring Evan Peters in the titular role, the series provided a harrowing look into Dahmer’s life, his heinous crimes, and their devastating impact on his victims’ families.

The season sparked widespread debate, drawing both critical acclaim and criticism. Some praised the series for shedding light on systemic failures that allowed Dahmer’s crimes to continue, while others criticized it for potentially re-traumatizing the victims’ families. Despite the controversy, the series was a massive success, becoming one of Netflix’s most-watched shows, with over a billion hours viewed within its first 60 days.

Following the success of Dahmer, Netflix announced the continuation of the Monster anthology with two additional seasons. Season 2, titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story, explores the infamous case of the Menéndez brothers, who were convicted of murdering their parents, José and Kitty Menéndez, in 1989. The case, marked by claims of abuse and a highly publicized trial, continues to spark debate about justice and morality.

With its gripping storytelling and high production value, Monster has cemented its place in the realm of true crime entertainment.

Behind the camera, Murphy, Brennan, and Hunnam join Max Winkler, Carl Franklin, and others as executive producers. Brennan will direct two episodes, with Winkler helming the rest of the season.

With its mix of true-crime notoriety and prestige drama, Monster: The Ed Gein Story is already set to be Netflix’s most haunting entry yet.
