‘Moses the Black’ shifts production from Chicago to Champaign area

The feature film Moses the Black, originally slated to film in Chicago, has shifted its filming location to the Champaign / Urbana area with a startup September 8–30, 2025.

Following the delay of their planned spring startup in Chicago, the production has now elected to film down south, with production offices based at Flyover Studios, the new state-of-the-art facility that occupies a portion of the former Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois.

The gritty gangland drama comes from writer-director Yelena Popovic. Chukwudi Iwuji, Omar Epps, Wiz Khalifa, and Quavo are set to star in the film. Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is set as executive producer. Simeon Faith is financing, along with the Nick Mirkopoulos Cinematic Fund.

Moses the Black is inspired by the fourth-century saint of the same name. Reimaging the story, a gangster in modern day Chicago undergoes a profound transformation, mirroring the journey of the ancient saint who transitioned from a life of crime to one of spiritual devotion. Popovic, who wrote the script and will direct the film, aims to illustrate that “no life is lost or meaningless in the eyes of God,” emphasizing themes of redemption and hope.
