Michigan’s film tax incentives, arguably the most aggressive of any state, are definitely in trouble under the administration of Republican Governor-elect Rick Snyder. What’s not certain is just how much trouble.
“There may still be some strategic need for incentives, but not at that scale,” Snyder told AnnArbor.com the day before he was elected.
“If you fix the underlying tax and regulatory environment, they should be able to dramatically be scaled back.”
Snyder’s deputy communications director Ryan Kazmirzack reiterated Snyder’s position on Nov. 19. “Rick has said the film subsidy is unsustainable, and he wants to phase it down,” Kazmirzack says.
“He disagreed with the incentive but realized that people made investment decisions based on what lawmakers did.”
