Local work shines in Talking Films Film Festival

Filmmakers Ines Sommer and Kathy Berger say the films they’ve lined up for their May 1-3 Talking Films Festival are expected to draw more than 1,000 movie fans from the North Shore.

An extension of their popular monthly Reeltime program, Evanston’s first film festival will screen 20 programs of features and shorts made since 2007.

The festival mixes the work of local filmmakers with indie features, high-profile animations, indie features and challenging documentaries from the U.S., Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

They include two digital shorts by Paula Froehle, Flashpoint’s academic dean, and Jodie Mack, School of the Art Institute MFA graduate, whose animated musical collage, “Yard Work is Hard Work,” plays twice over the weekend.

Short film programs include this year’s 16 live action and animated Academy Award nominees for best short films
