Local screenwriters to make L.A. connections

Two successful Hollywood players take two unique and different approaches on how to break through the dense and mysterious world of creating screenplays that sell.

Sterling Anderson of Blackbelt Screenwriting brings his insights and a rare and important guest to Chicago on Oct. 16 and producer Barri Evans’ The Big Ideas immersion seminar takes place Nov. 12 through Sunday, Nov. 14.

Anderson will be accompanied by Jenny Frankfurt, head of the literary department of L.A.-based Highstreet Management, whose clients include local screenwriter Colin Costello.

While instructors a’plenty have taught their techniques here over the years, Frankfurt’s appearance marks the first time in recent memory a talent executive has spoken to a group of local screenwriters.

“There were two things that struck me the last time I spoke in Chicago,” said Anderson. “One, there is a plethora of talent there and two, they don’t have a bridge to Hollywood.”

Consequently, he said, “I decided to give writers the opportunity for a literary agent to critique their work. The writer can submit a log line and treatment and receive feedback treatment from Jenny as to whether their idea is good or bad.”

Anderson, a multi-Image Award winner, has been writing and producing features and TV movies for TriStar, Columbia Disney and other studios since 1990. He has written episodes for “The Medium” and “The Unit.”

The Anderson-Frankfurt seminar will be held Columbia College, 1104 S. Wabash, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., $299; sign up at
