In a move to combat excessive sugar consumption among children, PLEZi Nutrition, co-founded by former First Lady Michelle Obama, has unveiled the PLEZi Sugar Pack—a groundbreaking backpack crafted from sugarcane fabric.
This innovative initiative coincides with the back-to-school season, emphasizing healthier lifestyle choices through creative and sustainable fashion.
Designed by Kheris Rogers, the youngest designer to grace New York Fashion Week, the PLEZi Sugar Pack merges functionality with cutting-edge style, aligning with the company’s ethos of reducing sugar intake among youth.
The U.S. faces a severe health crisis, with children consuming an average of 53 pounds of added sugar each year, predominantly from sugary beverages. The PLEZi Sugar Pack not only serves as a practical school accessory but also as a symbol of the brand’s commitment to less sugary diets. The backpack is expected to inspire students to make healthier choices, reflecting the essence of PLEZi’s low-sugar beverages.
“Creating the PLEZi Sugar Pack was an exhilarating challenge,” remarked Rogers. “I wanted to design something that stands out, makes a statement, and represents personal expression. I’m thrilled for students to carry a piece of this vision back to school with them.”
This eco-friendly backpack is distinguished by its robust sugarcane fabric, developed by Carnegie Fabrics, ensuring durability and resistance to stains, bacteria, and moisture—ideal for the rigors of daily student life. The design includes 18 custom patches, some of which honor celebrities Stephen and Ayesha Curry, recent investors and brand ambassadors for PLEZi.
Michelle Obama, reflecting on the launch, stated, “At PLEZi Nutrition, we strive to blend innovation with fun, demonstrating that health-conscious decisions can also be enjoyable and stylish. This backpack underscores our belief that good health and great style can go hand in hand.”
The excitement surrounding the PLEZi Sugar Pack has been fueled by social media teasers, including a video posted by Steph Curry, heightening anticipation for the release. In addition to celebrating healthy lifestyles, PLEZi Nutrition will donate $10 to FoodCorps for every sign-up to receive a backpack, further supporting nutritional education and access to healthy school meals nationwide.
As PLEZi continues to grow its presence in the health and wellness sector, the PLEZi Sugar Pack stands as a testament to the brand’s innovative spirit and dedication to fostering a healthier future for the next generation.
The backpack became available for free on a first-come, first-served basis beginning August 28 at 7pm ET, marking a significant step in PLEZi Nutrition’s mission to promote healthier living through inventive approaches.
