Grammy certified film scorer “Diggy” Morrison

WHO HE IS: Composer Rob “Diggy” Morrison’s 2004 remix score for Beyonc? Knowles’ phenomenally popular dance tune “Crazy in Luv” garnered him Grammy certification, awarded to those who contribute to Grammy award-winning projects.

RECENT WORK: Diggy scored two indie films released in December: William Pierce’s “Ran$um Games” and Roxxy Cooley’s “Fassie Tails.”

HOW HE VIEWS HIS JOB: Scoring a film to enhance the emotion within a story. “Anyone who watches a film can be taken to another level emotionally” by the blend of music and emotion.

After the recent “Ran$sum Games” screening to a sold out audience, producer William Pierce told Diggy how people said they were moved by the score, and others said “this music is so hot.” His work being compared to John Williams (“Star Wars”).

THE CHALLENGE: Adapting to film after years of arranging the mix behind R&B dance tunes.

“You need to really understand the algorhythyms of setting a piece of music to the scenes,” he notes.

“For three weeks I worked on the score for ?Ran$um Games’ after teaching from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. every night. Bill Pierce had to scratch what I’d done. We started over and two days later, we had what we needed.”

TOOLS OF THE TRADE: By avoiding what Diggy calls the “button pusher syndrome,” he feels the computer is priceless in scoring.

“Right now I am using Apple’s Logic 7. It’s an open screen where you can see everything. It is like a full production facility on my computer screen.”
