Flex Obscura, a new film series and festival concept is adding film to the fold at the 9th Annual AfroFuturist Weekend Festival with support by Elastic Arts. Flex Obscura Series & Festival will do a Friday takeover during the larger AfroFuturist Weekend Festival slated to take place October 2-6, 2024 at Elastic Arts in
Logan Square.
Friday, October 4 will feature a Retro/Futurespective with visionary artist and director Terence Nance notably known for his HBO series Random Acts of Flyness and most recently as director of André 3000’s short film Listening to the Sun. Nance will join in virtually for a live conversation with Flex Obscura attendees on Friday and several of Nance’s shorts will be screened in conversation with a highly curated group of short films by up-and-coming directors.
The curation includes:
- Netflix supported 2024 Oscar Qualifying Short: Ro & The Stardust by director Enice Levis having its Illinois Premier at the festival. The film follows a teen and her terminally ill grandmother as they build a rocket ship they plan to launch to outer space.
- World Premiere of With a Promise to Love you Deeply by Chicago- based filmmaker Taylor Wren.
- Screenings by fellow Chicago-based filmmakers: New Hire by director Aquarius Ester Algeria, Backward Lament by director Lomai, Scroll Food by director Jason H. Bonner and writer David Leonard.
- Two other short films having their Illinois Premieres including Smile4Kime by director Elena Guzman and Bubbling Synapses by director William Eguienta.
The evening includes special performances by Angel Bat Dawid and Dark Matter 2024 Resident Nikki Patin all culminating in the Club Obscura Afterparty featuring CTRLZORA & DJ King GNS!
