Is the Emmy love affair with The Bear over?

The bear

The Chicago-set series The Bear left the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards with zero wins on Sunday. The FX drama competed in six top categories but was blanked as The Studio and Hacks dominated the comedy races.

So, is the love gone?

Season three nominations for The Bear included Outstanding Comedy Series, lead acting nods for Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri, supporting nominations for Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colón-Zayas, and a directing nomination for Edebiri for the episode “Napkins.” None converted.

The shutout followed a quiet showing at the 2025 Creative Arts Emmys earlier this month. Olivia Colman and Jamie Lee Curtis lost guest actress in a comedy to Julianne Nicholson for Hacks, and Jon Bernthal lost guest actor in a comedy to Bryan Cranston for The Studio. In total, The Bear went zero for seven at Creative Arts, then zero for six on the telecast.

It is a sharp turn from recent years. The Bear swept the comedy side of the Primetime Emmys in 2023, winning six awards, and added four more in 2024. That awards momentum collided with a season three that split viewers, with some fans frustrated by the show’s narrative turns and tone.

The series has long faced questions about category placement. Executive producer Josh Senior previously told Deadline that the show’s half-hour format qualifies it for comedy and said the goal is to tell a real story that can be both funny and painful. Star Jeremy Allen White has backed the comedy classification, while Ebon Moss-Bachrach has called traditional genre labels outdated.

Season four premiered this summer and ended with Carmy deciding to leave the restaurant he built with Sydney, who steps in to lead. Despite the shutout and the polarizing reception to season three, The Bear was renewed for season five in July.

For now, the comedy crown belongs to The Studio, which won Outstanding Comedy Series and led all shows in total wins, while Hacks added more hardware of its own. Whether The Bear can regain its former Emmy heat will be one of the storylines to watch next season.
